Welcome to The Hague, for over 400 years now the seat of the government, since 1981 a royal city again and a city of peace, character and prestige. The city is more than 750 years old and over the last century-and-a-half has developed into a large urban conglomerate, with a great deal of activity, cultural facilities and first-rate shops. From a town with 75,000 inhabitants in 1850, The Hague (also known as ‘The Residence’, because Queen Beatrix, the head of state, lives and works there) has grown into the third largest city of the Netherlands with over 455,000 inhabitants. Owing to this late but explosive growth, The Hague has very striking architecture from the 19th and 20th century.
Available from the Scheveningen and The Hague Centre Tourist Information Shops.
