Welcome to Rotterdam
As Europe’s largest seaport – and one of the largest ports in the world - Rotterdam is a key economic asset of The Netherlands. The Port of Rotterdam has a surface of 100 km² and is of vital logistic importance to the European hinterlands and the rest of the world. But while throughput operations and industry shift towards the sea, the inner city is blossoming like never before. The container revolution and the construction of mega-terminals close to the North Sea has transformed the old inner-city docklands into living and working areas with luxurious apartments, shops, pavement cafés and restaurants.

Although the actual city dates back to the 13th century, present-day Rotterdam is an ultramodern city with innovative architecture. Its centre is filled with high-rises and broad boulevards and buildings such as the Van Nelle Factory, the Cube houses and the Kunsthal are world famous. Within a very short period of time, the Erasmus bridge has become the city’s symbol. But the ‘Rotterdammers’ have not yet finished building and are ready for the 21st century - Rotterdam pushes forward and upward.

Rotterdam’s approach mirrors that of its most famous son - the 15th century humanist philosopher Erasmus: ‘No one respects a talent that is concealed’. And Rotterdam has never been known for its modesty, so Rotterdam will keep surprising with new architecture, festivals, sport events, provocative art, unique shops, good hotels and restaurants and a trend setting nightlife.

All this provides an excellent basis for congresses, meetings, exhibitions and other business events. Whether it is a state-of-the-art conference centre, a 5-star deluxe hotel or an unconventional venue, Rotterdam is bound to have it. If not, it will probably be built within a couple of years. Besides, the shipping, logistic, financial, medical, ICT and construction industries based in Rotterdam provide a good setting for a congress, meeting or exhibitions. The expertise is widely available and will surely attract the right clients or participants.

Through the ages, Rotterdam and its inhabitants have proved they are eager to use a bit of elbow grease. A popular joke states that in Rotterdam shirts are sold with the sleeves rolled up. The city’s businesslike attitude and its flexibility to overcome difficult challenges have made it to what it is: straightforward, open and honest. This young, surprising and international city on the water has a very warm welcome for you!
